Just like other learning difficulties, dyscalculia tends to run in families. That suggests that there is a genetic component. Searches for particular genes that cause dyscalculia have not led to any real results. There isn't a gene for dyscalculia, or a gene for dyslexia. Instead, what geneticists are finding is that many genes that each have a small effect contribute to individual differences in reading and math.
