GILBERT STRANG: OK, what I want to do today is show you two different ways that derivatives are used. In one of them, the problem is to find a close approximation to the value f at a point x. f of x. The second application is to solve an equation, where often-- and I use a different letter, capital F, just because it's a different function and there will be different examples for this one.
