JERRY BALDASTY: Good evening. Hi. I'm Jerry Baldasty. I'm the interim provost and executive vice president. Welcome to the 40th annual university faculty lecture. Every year, the University of Washington faculty members select one of their peers to present this distinguished lecture. Over the past four decades, we've seen an impressive list of presenters give this prestigious lecture-- historians, doctors, artists, engineers, and many others.
