After a jolt, the patient is saved. That life-saving technology is real. And it works because of two main electrical principles: electric potential energy and capacitance. Those paddles are parts of a defibrillator, which is basically just a really big capacitor. It uses electric charge to store energy, which is then discharged into the patient’s body.
