Cognitive flexibility is essential for responding rapidly and adaptively to changing situations. You have to get over your old way of thinking and adopt a new way of looking at something. It's absolutely central to social understanding. I understand my point of view on a particular situation, but I need to be cognitively flexible in order to take somebody else's perspective on that same situation. Difficulties with cognitive flexibility can interfere with social understanding in a wide range of different situations.
