In December 2016, a suicide bomber killed at least 25 people at a Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt. This was one of the deadliest attacks to ever target Coptic Christians, a religious minority accounting for roughly ten percent of Egypt’s population. Copts and other Christian sects have long faced violence and discrimination in Egypt and other parts of the Middle East, where Islam is the dominant religion.
